KC sees huge surge in deaths from drunken driving

Ralph and Debra Sutton left a New Year’s church party and stopped at a Kansas City intersection — unaware that the first few minutes of 2009 would be their last. A drunken driver accelerated recklessly behind them, oblivious to the red light. His car slammed into the Suttons’ car, which burst into flames. Everything inside burned.

Union concerns resolved at Claycomo plant, Ford says

Ford Motor Co. said Saturday that union concerns over working conditions at its Kansas City assembly plant had been resolved even as workers moved ahead with a planned strike authorization vote. Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans said officials from the automaker and United Auto Workers Local 249 reached an agreement late Friday on issues related to the workload at the Claycomo plant.

Gilberry a pleasant surprise for Chiefs

Three months ago, it wasn’t just an upset that Wallace Gilberry would be tied for the Chiefs’ lead in sacks at the season’s midway point. It was an upset that Gilberry, an undersized defensive end, would merely still be with the Chiefs. He joined the team last season only because a rash of injuries left them short of bodies at his position, one they fortified during the offseason when they drafted Tyson Jackson and Alex Magee and shifted Glenn Dorsey from tackle.
