LEAVENWORTH | A happy, party noise filled Annunciation Chapel on the last day of August, a breezy day that felt more spring than end of summer. Inside the little church next to the headquarters of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, people stood in the aisles and among the pews, talking, laughing and hugging one another.

It's closing in on 5 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. More than two dozen people scurry around a Crossroads event space, 10 or more of them at any one time prepping food in its large professional kitchen. Steven Shaw doesn't exactly look the part of captain of this cooking ship. He's wearing a red Mickey Mouse T-shirt and chef pants patterned in a colorful piscine design. His famous fish pants. But he's on task and upping the pressure.

John Irving has always called himself an underdog, and he still talks like one — even at 67, even wildly famous as one of America's great storytellers, even at the release of his 12th novel, certain to be a best-seller. Maybe he feels goaded. A recent review of “Last Night in Twisted River” used such words as tricked-up, gimmicky, cartoony, cheesy and preposterous — all in the first sentence.

Block 11 of The Star's Women of Influence quilt project, “Oak Leaves and Flowers,” honors Susan B. Anthony. No discussion of the women's suffrage movement would be complete without her. Born into a strict Quaker family on Feb. 15, 1820, Susan Brownell Anthony was taught to believe in herself and her convictions. Her parents sent her to school, but teachers refused to instruct her in subjects such as math because that was not taught to women at the time. Her father then arranged for private schooling for Susan and her sisters, using a female teacher.

Jetta Carleton opened her 1962 novel “The Moonflower Vine” by describing a family farm in western Missouri, below the river. It’s a land, she wrote, “cut by creeks, where high pastures rise out of wooded valleys to catch the sunlight and fall away over limestone bluffs. It is a pretty country. It does not demand your admiration, as some regions do, but seems glad for it all the same.”

Pennsylvania State Police say a man was drunk when he hopped on a lawn tractor and drove it to buy more beer. Police said 63-year-old Ford Earl Broome, of Export, was stopped by a state trooper at about 8 p.m. on Sept. 6. The trooper said he stopped Broome near a tavern, and that Broome smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk. Police said Broome denied drinking, but then acknowledged he "drank a little" before driving the tractor to a bar to buy more beer.
