Cityscape | KC area restaurants cited for violations

The Kansas Department of Agriculture has cited area restaurants for six or more critical health-code violations. •Captain D’s Seafood, 7525 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan., had nine critical violations during a follow-up inspection Oct. 7. They included raw fish stored on top of cooked rice in a walk-in cooler, and no hair net or restraint used by a food worker.

Applications open for spring session of Artist Inc. seminar

Artists will be able to get answers to questions about how to start and manage a business in an upcoming seminar put on by a group of area arts organizations. KCArtistLink, which includes the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City, the Charlotte Street Foundation and the Missouri Business & Technology Development Center, is accepting applications for the Spring 2010 seminar, called Artist Inc.

Emerging noteworthy | Two Johnson County spas to merge

Spa merger Serenity the Rejuvenating Day Spa, in Overland Park, is merging with Natural Body Spa and Shop, in Leawood, as of Nov. 1. Serenity owner Judy Hohn said in a news release that her 11 employees will move to Natural Body, which has 10 staff members.

Planning eases a company’s transition when a spouse dies

Losing a spouse is never easy under any circumstances. Replacing that spouse’s role in a family business while still grieving can be overwhelming. Years of preparation didn’t ease the pain of loss for Jan Green, but it did make things go much smoother when her husband, Joe, died in April.

Occu-Tec leaders Kansas City-based Occu-Tec last month named Joe Fiorella president and chief executive officer. The energy, environmental and safety services company also said co-founder and co-owner Skuli Gudmundsson is now the chief marketing officer while continuing as board chairman. Fiorella has worked for Tradebot Systems, Allied National Companies and ERA Franchise Systems.
