In the euphoria after the Kansas Jayhawks won the 2008 national championship, KU coach Bill Self was suddenly on the phone with a high school sophomore from Phoenix who really wanted to play for Self starting in the fall of 2010. Self hadn’t seen Royce Woolridge play, but KU assistant Kurtis Townsend had. Townsend liked what he saw in Woolridge, a 6-foot-3 combo guard, and hey, life was good, so why not? Self offered Woolridge a scholarship, Woolridge accepted, and for the last year and a half, neither side has budged on their mutual interest.

Pregame tidbit:
Was talking to John Kadlec, bon vivant, radio color man and former assistant football coach at both Missouri and Kansas State.
Kaddie, always good for a tall tale, noted that two years ago he shared an opinion with Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins on having Bill Self and Mark Mangino as coaches of basketball and football.
"You don't deserved those guys," Kadlec said he said.
Perkins asked for an explanation.

Not that it has anything to do with a football Saturday in the Big 12, but:
Baylor has suspended basketball start Tweety Carter for four games.
Unspecifiedvioltion of unspecified team rules, accord to Coach Scott Drew's announcement.
Baylor will be without the services of carter for crucial non-conference games against Norfolk State (he sat this one out on Friday), Hartford, Southern and Hardin-Simmons.
Carter is set to return for a Thanksgiving Day game, having paid his debt to society prior to the Bears playing Alabama on turkey day.

        How to take this game?
The Kansas State basketball team defeated Loyola-Chicago 92-54 in its season-opener and did so rather easily, which is good.
But coach Frank Martin was so angry with his team's performance that he said his players should be "embarrassed," which is bad.
As is the case in most situations like this, it's best to fall somewhere in the middle. That would make K-State's performance on Friday at Bramlage Coliseum fairly average.

I've predicted Missouri to win by three points in Manhattan on Saturday. I've also said my main reason for doing so is that Missouri needs this victory more than Kansas State.
Let me explain that.
At the start of the year, Kansas State was consigned to a losing season by almost everyone, including the school's most ardent supporters.
Already the best coach in the history of college football - Bill Snyder - has surpassed the level of success of even those who always view the glass as overflowing.
