Mavericks put on show for fans in home debut

Fans who sat by the glass got a close look at the Mavericks on Friday night in the team’s first home game against the Wichita Thunder at the Independence Events Center.

All it took was 3 seconds.

RALEIGH, N.C. | New York Islanders winger Kyle Okposo was questionable before Friday’s game because of swine flu, but he felt just fine afterward. Okposo snapped a shot past Carolina Hurricanes goalie Manny Legace with 14.4 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Islanders a 4-3 victory.

PITTSBURGH | The New Jersey Devils closed within a victory of tying the NHL record of 10 consecutive road victories to start a season, beating the slumping Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Thursday night. Niclas Bergfors had a goal and two assists for the Devils. Zach Parise added a goal and an assist, Travis Zajac had three assists, and Martin Brodeur made 25 saves as New Jersey improved to 9-0 on the road.

They walked by “Wet Paint” signs and still could see and hear the last-minute hustle and bustle of workmen putting the finishing touches on the Kansas City area’s newest jewel of a sports facility. And as the Missouri Mavericks skated onto the ice of the Independence Events Center for the very first time for Thursday morning’s practice, they gawked and gushed at the plush, yet compact arena.

COLUMBUS, Ohio | Detroit scored four times early in the first period and Niklas Kronwall had two power-play goals and an assist in the Red Wings’ 9-1 rout of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night. Justin Abdelkader tallied two late goals, Dan Cleary, Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi each had a goal and assist, and Kris Draper and Ville Leino also scored for Detroit, which despite major injuries to several key players and a recent loss to lowly Toronto are 5-1-1 in their last seven games.

LOUIS | David Perron scored three goals, two in a span of 1:54 during a four-goal first period, and Brad Boyes added a goal and three assists, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 6-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. The Blues scored four times in the first 7:36. Andy McDonald added a goal and two assists in his 500th NHL game to lead the Blues, who had scored only two goals in their previous four games in St. Louis. Erik Johnson also scored, and Chris Mason made 22 saves for the Blues.

CHICAGO | Jonathan Toews and Troy Brouwer scored power-play goals in a 3:31 span early in the third period Monday night, helping the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Toews had been out with a concussion since Vancouver’s Willie Mitchell leveled him on Oct. 21. The Blackhawks lost three of six games without their captain Toews, who had a team-high 34 goals last season.
