Busch says Stewart should have been black-flagged

JOLIET, Ill. | Tony Stewart on Wednesday called his last-lap encounter with Kyle Busch at Daytona International Speedway last weekend “just a part of racing,” and said Busch apparently agrees. Stewart said he spoke to Busch on Tuesday and that the two were on the “same page” after the accident that sent Busch to the infield care center and Stewart to victory lane in the final moments of the 400-mile race on Saturday night.

Tony Stewart just made a move that every other driver on the track, any driver trying to win a race, would have made. He kept his line while Kyle Busch dipped forward to try to block him. As a result, Busch spun up the track and wrecked his car, and Stewart won the Coke Zero 400 on Saturday night. It was a win at a track that’s special to him in a season for Stewart-Haas Racing that has exceeded everybody’s expectations.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | Brian France said NASCAR’s drug testing policy is the toughest in professional sports, despite a federal judge’s ruling that overturned driver Jeremy Mayfield’s suspension. Mayfield was indefinitely suspended May 9 for what NASCAR said was a positive test for methamphetamines. He sued to be reinstated, and a federal judge issued an injunction Wednesday that allowed Mayfield to return to competition based on Mayfield’s argument that NASCAR’s testing system is flawed.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | Clint Bowyer won the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway for his first victory of the year. Bowyer, the defending series champion, was the leader when a four-car accident brought out the caution with six laps to go in Friday night’s Subway Jalapeno 250 race. That set up a final two-lap overtime sprint, and Bowyer of Emporia, Kan., lined up next to Carl Edwards of Columbia for the double-file restart.

Greinke the Great.After delving into the Yuniesky Betancourt trade, I have a burning need to write something positive. Luckily, the presence of Zack Greinke means there will be rosy statistical nuggets to throw out there for Royals fans all season. There are plenty to choose from. Joe Posnanski laid out the argument for Greinke as the AL's starting pitcher in next Tuesday's All-Star game. As I mentioned in my previous post, Greinke ranks second in the big leagues in my Wins-Added metric, which makes him not only the best pitcher in the league this season, but the best overall player. If he doesn't face off against Tim Lincecum on Tuesday, there should be a federal inquiry. Anyway, here are my two current favorite Greinke nuggets.read more

Yuniesky Betancourt: A rather harsh analysis

Can't figure this one out.This is discouraging. It really is. The press release just landed in my e-mail inbox and it really kind of took my breath away. The Royals have traded prospects Danny Cortes and Derrick Saito for Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt. Folks, this is your new shortstop. Betancourt is currently rehabbing from a hamstring injury, but when he returns, he will almost certainly become KC's regular at the most important defensive position on the field. Why is this such bad news? Well, Betancourt is 27, which means he is entering his offensive peak and should already be at his defensive peak. And, according to my system, he is the second-worst player in baseball this season.read more

This one's for JT.An interesting tidbit popped up in Ken Rosenthal's notes column today regarding Mark Teahen. As it regards trade rumors, you have to take it with a grain of salt and while he quotes a member of the Royals' front office, he doesn't say who it was. With that said, the suggestion is that the Royals aren't particularly willing to part with Teahen and may even be planning to move him to a corner outfield position on a permanent basis.read more
